POLICE in the Yarra Ranges have reminded drivers to keep to the 40kmh speed limit in school zones when students return for the start of the school year on Monday.
Leading Senior Constable Stephen McIlroy said drivers could not underestimate the dangers of speeding through 40kmh school zones.
"It's important people take notice of speed signs and be extra vigilant and aware of all pedestrians.
"Young children, especially those new to the school, can have little road sense and be unaware of the dangers."
The penalties for speeding in school zones between 8am-9.30am and 2.30pm-4pm on school days start at $146.
Speeding drivers risk fines of up to $264 for being 11-24 kmh over the sign-posted limit.
