Bicycle cage installed for commuters

20 Jan, 2009 03:00 AM
CROYDON train commuters who cycle to the railway station can now secure their bikes after a bike cage was installed last week.

The cage is among 23 across Victoria that form part of a State Government pledge to improve cyclists' access to public transport.

The bike cages, known as Parkiteer cages, provide secure parking for about 25 bikes and are accessible via a Parkiteer swipe card for registered members.

Bicycle Victoria facilities development manager Jason den Hollander said the cages would give more people the option of combining bike and train travel.

"We've already had a terrific response, with almost 200 cyclists registering to be part of the Parkiteer scheme.

"Developing a convenient bike connection between communities and the public transport system is an important part of ensuring the network is accessible for all."

Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the Government was taking action to deal with the massive patronage growth on the rail network.

"That's why we're looking at an increasingly integrated approach so we can cater to the different needs of people travelling to the station.

"The Parkiteer bike cages will be a great addition for people who want to access the rail network by bike and enjoy secure, undercover parking for free."
