KYLE Vassil was farewelled by his classmates and teachers at a special memorial service at Aquinas College in Ringwood last week.
More than 1300 people packed the school's gymnasium to pay tribute to the year 7 student, who drowned on February 17 while swimming in a watering hole at a school orientation camp.
Kyle's older sister, Kacylyn, a year 12 student at the college, spoke at the memorial on behalf of her family.
She described him as an "amazing" brother who had loved life.
"There is so much I could say about my brother," she said.
"I am certain my brother was the best brother I could possibly have. My family was so lucky to have this little boy as part of our family."
Kacylyn reflected on her favourite memories of Kyle, including family holidays, playing basketball and video games.
She said Kyle, 12, was "so kind" to everyone, and never wanted anyone to fight.
"He had a kind heart, he was the man of the house, especially after Mum and Dad split.
"He looked after me and I looked after him - we were a good team.
"I will miss him so much as my brother, but also as a great friend.
"It's a shame most of you have not met my brother and never will get the chance to.
"Kyle, my little brother, goodbye for now until we meet again. May you rest in peace forever."
Childhood photographs of Kyle were screened as the song Forever Young played and the college a capella group sang The World's Greatest.
School chaplain Matthew Hufer said Kyle's death had been "a painful journey" for the school community.
"The life of Aquinas has changed but it has not ended. Kyle has brought us together and his spirit is well alive in us."
Principal Tony O'Byrne described Kyle's death as a "time of grief but also a celebration of a life lived".
At the end of the service, school captains Cassie Hutchinson and Ash Woodward presented a book of condolence to Kyle's father, William, in which a large number of students had written a message of support to the Vassil family.
