Candidate joins push to shut down recycler

09 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM

THE manager of a Ringwood recycling firm has met calls for its immediate closure with an invitation to a candidate for the federal seat of Deakin, Phil Barresi, to visit the plant.

CMA Recycling Ringwood plant's chief operations manager, Chris Peschke, was disappointed that Mr Barresi - a former Deakin MP who co-founded the Heatherdale Community Action Group - last week joined the group in calling for the closure.

About a dozen residents gathered in Heatherdale Road, opposite CMA Recycling, on Thursday to voice their ongoing concern about the noise, dust and lighting eminating from the plant.

Residents Paul Putney and Gary Rose said they had both had to replace their car tyres several times after they were damaged by scrap metal that had fallen off CMA trucks travelling down the street.

Mr Barresi said it was only one example of what residents had had to endure over the years.

He called on the State Government and Planning Minister Justin Madden to "step in and immediately order the closure of the hazardous and noisy CMA scrapyard to ensure the safety and well-being of the local residents or relocate out of the area".

"Have a look at your laws and make sure you make the necessary changes so you can have residents' needs looked after as well as companies," he said.

"We are all in favour of recycling operations but the patience of the local community has been tested well beyond breaking point."

Mr Peschke said he was surprised about the protest because the parties would again be heard at a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing in May.

"All stakeholders have agreed there is a statutory process in place and that's VCAT and that's the route we're following. I cannot understand why now they'd ask for our closure."

He said the company was "in the process of spending money and engineering noise solutions" such as walls and other noise abatements, which would be "completed in the very near future" and certainly before the May hearing.

As for Mr Barresi's involvement, Mr Peschke said the former MP had not contacted the company since being endorsed as the Liberal candidate for his old seat.

"I don't know if he's ever been to our site, but we would certainly welcome him so he could see what we're doing to improve things."

I would like to express my excitment and support Mr Barresi's push for the closure of CMA recycling. Finally I am beginning to gain hope that CMA will close or relocate and the residents of the area will be able to enjoy their homes in the peace and quiet we are entitled. Until now it seemed like a lost cause for the residents and nothing could be done to stop CMA to go on causing suffering and distress to us the residents nearby, but for the first time after reading the article I feel that Barresi is doing what needs to be done and I will join him!!!!!!
