THE State Government has confirmed it will extend bus lanes along Stud Road in a bid to improve public transport in Melbourne's outer east.
Last week, Roads Minister Tim Pallas announced priority bus lanes would be installed on sections of Stud Road by early next year, following consultation with local communities and councils.
Mr Pallas said the left lane of Stud Road between Boronia Road, Bayswater, and David Street in Dandenong would operate as a bus lane when existing parking and clearway restrictions applied.
"These changes will only occur on three lane sections of the road where there is no signed parking to be impacted.
"The bus lanes will also be set back from intersections, giving traffic access to all lanes at these points so motorists are not unnecessarily held up."
RACV chief engineer Peter Daly welcomed the plan, saying it was important to encourage more people to consider using buses.
Knox councillor Mick Van de Vreede said the plan was a "good start by the government to provide priority for buses".
Cr Van de Vreede said some SmartBuses had had trouble keeping to their timetables due to being caught in traffic. "This will go some way to alleviating that."
Mr Pallas said the Stud Road bus lanes would "close some of the gaps on an already extensive network of bus lanes in the Knox area".
"The installation of bus lanes on Stud Road follows extensive consultation with the City of Knox, the City of Greater Dandenong and other key stakeholders, which resulted in positive feedback about the existing Stud Road bus lanes and support for an expanding bus lane network in the area."
Mr Pallas said further consultation with local councils was continuing for a proposed trial of bus lanes along Springvale Road.
