Leak response 'wrong message'

09 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM

A BURST water pipe left leaking outside a primary school for almost two weeks has a Ringwood East resident voicing his concerns about water saving.

John Weymouth first noticed the water running down the footpath outside Eastwood Primary School on Alexandra Road on January 22.

"It looked like the ground had been dug up for some reason and on each side of the nature strip water was coming out. I assumed there'd been a leak and someone has fixed it but it's started leaking again."

Mr Weymouth contacted Yarra Valley Water that day to alert them of the leak and was told it would be fixed, however nothing was done for about a week.

"I was told that they'd get someone out but over a week later it was still leaking. It's rather ridiculous when we're told time and time again to save water and fix dripping taps."

The Journal visited the site about 11.45am on February 2 to find water still leaking along the footpath.

"It appears to have been fixed now, but I think someone with a shovel could have done it in about five minutes. It's a pity they have to rely on contractors, otherwise it probably could be fixed a lot sooner."

Yarra Valley Water general manager infrastructure services David Snadden said a crew was out to investigate and repair the leak following Mr Weymouth's report.

"After excavating the area we found that the actual leak was not directly underneath where it appeared on the surface.

"Leak detection using specialised sounding equipment was requested to determine the actual location of the source of the leak.

"The leak was traced to 14 Langley Street and the crew were unable to fix it due to the location of a large wasp nest which needed fumigating prior to removal.

"In the meantime, the water was turned off to the leaking section and a temporary diversion hose connected to maintain water supply to properties.

"This fumigation work meant a five-day wait before repairs could be done so work was rescheduled for January 5."

Mr Snadden said Mr Weymouth had been contacted and updated about the work that was being done and the expected date of completion.

Kilsyth MP David Hodgett said the Government needed to do more to ensure its water saving policy.

"[The Government is] asking people to scrimp and save every last drop while those very same people are looking at a burst pipe flooding out the front of their house for 12 days.

"It sends the wrong message to responsible people like Mr Weymouth who are doing the right thing."
