A BAN on pets on long-haul train and bus services has left a Chirnside Park woman stranded in her own home.
Octogenarian Denise McNelis and her beloved cavalier King Charles spaniel Ricki cannot travel on V/Line services due to the animal ban.
Despite pets being allowed on suburban commuter trains, animals are banned from all "long-haul services for customer comfort and safety," a State Government spokesman said.
Guide dogs, companion animals, hearing dogs and guide dogs in training are exempt from the ban.
Ms McNelis used to drive to Bairnsdale to visit her daughter about four times a year, but has since found the drive too long.
"I can take Ricki on a plane as part of the baggage. It seems a bit tough you can't take pets on trains in a cage.
"I don't expect them to be running around the carriage or barking and carrying on."
On commuter trains, passengers can takes pets on a lead without the need of a cage.
Former transport minister Lynne Kosky introduced the ban on V/Line train and coach services in January 2008.
Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe criticised the State Government's refusal to withdraw the policy that applies to V/Line trains.
"Dogs are permitted on metropolitan trains as long as they are on leads, muzzled, don't block doorways and owners clean up any mess left behind.
"Why can't the same fairness be applied for anyone wanting to use V/Line services?
"For many Yarra Ranges residents, pets are an important part of the family. Placing restrictions on pet travel means many people will stay at home rather than leave their beloved pet behind."
