MAROONDAH Council has offered residents a once-only opportunity to dispose of green waste free, following the launch of Community Bushfire Action Week.
Mayor Peter Gurr said residents could contact the council to request a voucher, which will allow 500 kilograms of clean green waste to be disposed of at the Whitehorse Transfer Station.
"With the declared fire season just around the corner, it's a good time to remember that, when it comes to bushfires, prevention is always better than cure.
"Bushfire Action Week is the time for residents to identify their risk, start preparing their bushfire survival plan and start clearing their properties.
"While many residents are able to manage the removal of their green waste using their fortnightly council collection, there will be many who find the need to remove larger quantities of material."
Cr Gurr said residents should check that spouts, gutters and roofs were cleared of combustible material and boundary fences cleared of long grass and rubbish.
"Any stored flammable liquids should be kept to a minimum and it's also a good idea to clear vegetation around trees and clear beneath timber decks and pergolas.
"Inside the home, make sure all electrical appliances work properly, including your smoke alarms, and don't forget to check the backup battery.
"Other lifesaving recommendations are to have an evacuation plan and an alternative means of getting out of the family home, and keep a list of emergency service contact numbers next to the phone."
Community Bushfire Action Week is from October 11-18. The free green waste disposal will run from October 26 to November 8.
The Whitehorse Transfer Station, at Burwood Highway, Vermont South, is open from 6.30am-4pm daily. Details: 1300882233.
