FORMER Kilsyth resident Mark Phillips will bring his folk acoustic sounds to Croydon when he performs at the Maroondah Festival next month.
Phillips, an established musician for more than six years, began playing guitar at the age of 15 after developing an interest in the performing arts industry, stage productions and Shakespearean plays.
"I always had a passion for music so I focused on developing my musical career. The thing that I enjoy most about performing is the applause of an appreciative crowd.
"There really is no better feeling than a crowd of strangers taking the time to listen to my artwork and then applaud my efforts."
Phillips, who has performed at more than 27 venues in and around Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, said the secret to combating nerves was to "eliminate the build up" and to not prepare at all.
"I try not to think about it too much or else I probably would get nervous. Instead I just go about my day casually and then rock up to a gig with a clear mind."
The 21 year old describes his music - folk/country and occasional blues songs - as "easy-flowing beach tunes with a relaxed ambience that's good for all ages".
"I derive inspiration from artists such as Jack Johnson and Xavier Rudd, not just for their music but also for their lyrics.
"Both artists write songs that have a lot of meaning about today's society and how it has an impact on our everyday lives."
Phillips, who recently won best male singer/songwriter performance at the Basin Music Folk Festival, is in the middle of recording a six-song EP, which he hopes to release next year as part of his Along The Road tour.
He will perform at the Maroondah Festival, at Town Park, Croydon, on November 8.
