MORE than 100 blankets have been given to bushfire victims at Yarra Glen relief centre and to affected communities.
The hand-knitted "blankets of friendship" were donated last week with 100 more nearly ready to be donated.
Dawn Stuckey, a member of internet knitting group ravelry.com, turned her home into a workshop where knitted patches are sorted and sewn together.
"When I heard that one of our local 'ravellers' had lost her husband and home in the bushfires at Callignee, Gippsland, on February 7, it was suggested to me that we make her a blanket to let her know we cared.
"A call was put out for fellow 'ravellers' to donate knitted squares to be made into blankets." After she was interviewed on local ABC radio, blankets and squares were soon arriving from all over Australia as well as from several overseas countries.
Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe helped deliver the blankets to bushfire victims last week. "It was heart-warming to see some of the looks on people's faces when they realise others are still caring," she said.
Ms Fyffe, who received the blankets with relief centre volunteer Lesley Wood, praised volunteers for their dedication and hard work.
"For people who have never asked for handouts in their life, the recovery process has been made that little bit easier by the compassionate and understanding staff."
