'Weekend' cyclist not just along for the ride

03 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
EMERGING cyclist Ryan Green blitzed the competition to record his second consecutive title in the Victorian Schools Cycling State Championships last month.

The Southwood Boys Grammar student competed in the under-19 Novice event and rode a clever tactical race to clinch victory on a rain-affected course in Lygon Street, Carlton.

"I just sat on the back of the peloton, not doing too much work," Green said. "When it came down to maybe 200 metres to go, that's when I started to sprint."

His back-to-back victories were all the more impressive because the championships were the only cycling competitions he entered each year.

Most of his cycling is recreational. Each weekend he takes to the road with his father, Guy, who rides with the Eastern Veterans Cycling Club.

"I try to ride about 100 kilometres every weekend and when the race comes up I try to do a bit of extra training," Green said. "There are a lot of good riders my age, and a lot of very strong riders who compete."

Green, 16, who has raced in the velodrome but prefers road cycling, hopes to make a career out of the sport.

"I'm doing the Great Victorian Bike Ride this year. I got talked into that, and then I'm hoping to get my [competitive riding] licence next year and start racing more after that."
