A RINGWOOD youngster is skating to success after being selected to represent Victoria at the 2010 Australian National Ice Hockey Championships in Brisbane next month.

Tim Vanderwolf said he was "very proud of myself" after being chosen as part of the under-13 team. "I'm very happy that my coach thought I was good enough," he said.

Despite only playing the sport since last year, Tim has been a keen in-line hockey player since he was about three years old, which he said had given him an easy transition to ice hockey.

The 12-year-old trains and plays each week for the Bombers ice hockey team in Oakleigh. Previously, he was a member of the Bayswater Lions In-line Hockey team.

Tim, a grade 6 pupil at Kalinda Primary School in Ringwood, said he enjoyed the speed and physical aspect of the sport.

He was confident the Victorian team would do well during the competition. "I think we'll win. Last year we came second - New South Wales is our biggest competition. But I think we'll have a chance this year."

Tim's 13-year-old sister, Kristelle was also selected as part of the under-15 Victorian team to compete in the 2010 Australian National Ice Hockey Championships in Melbourne this week.
